Lesson Study in Early Childhood Settings

This will happen on 4 September 2013.

This lecture is about the process of lesson study and how it provides teachers with professional development in content, pedagogy and content-pedagogical knowledge. The speaker will describes each stage of the process and what each stake holder can do to maximise the impact of lesson study.

It is given by Dr Yeap Ban Har.

Dr Yeap Ban Har is the principal of Marshall Cavendish Institute and also Director of Curriculum and Professional Development at Pathlight School. He teaches mathematics education courses all over the world and taught at National Institute of Education for a decade prior to his current appointments in 2010. In early childhood education, he teaches courses at SEED Institute / Wheelock College and SIM University. In lesson study, he is Singapore's specialist at APEC Lesson Study research group. He is also a council member at World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS). In WALS 2013 in Sweden, he will participate in a plenary session on lesson study in early childhood setting with professors from Sweden and Japan. He holds a Ph.D. in mathematics education and Master of Arts in Southeast Asian Studies (NUS) and Master of Education (NIE/NTU).

28 April 2010 I presented an introduction to lesson study to teachers at the newly set up School of Science and Technology.
13 April 2010 Workshop on facilitating post-lesson discussion hosted by North Vista Primary School for the school cluster. There was opportunity for participants to observe an open lesson and participate in the post-lesson discussion.
20 February 2010 I delivered a lecture at APEC- Tsukuba University International Conference in Tokyo on the use of assessment tasks in lesson study.
24 Feb, 10, 24 & 31 March 2010 In-service course Lesson Study in Primary Mathematics: Concepts & Principles. Venue: Bukit View Primary School. The follow-up course which required teachers to go through one cycle of the lesson-study process included teams from Bukit View rimary School (two teams), Princess Elizabeth Primary School, Lakeside Primary School (two teams)
13 January 2010 & 9 February 2010 I delivered an introductory lecture on lesson study to staff of Woodlands Ring Primary School and Da Qioa Primary School. The session at Da Qiao was recorded by ETD. Hopefully, it will produce a e-version of this lecture so that other schools that wants its teachers to be introduced to lesson study can use this as a resource.
2, 9, 16 & 21 March 2009 In-service course Lesson Study in Primary Mathematics: Concepts & Principles. Venue: Maris Stella High School (Primary). The follow-up course which required teachers to go through one cycle of the lesson-study process included teams from Haig Girls' School, North Vista Primary School and Ang Mo Kio Primary School
24 November 2009 I delivered three sessions on lesson study in pre-school setting in Singapore. This is based on my work with five PCF Kindergartens and Ministry of Education.
23 November 2009. I delivered a short lecture on lesson study to a gathering of middle managers from School Cluster North 4 at Nan Chiau High School.
21 November 2009. I delivered a plenary lecture on lesson study under the title How To Empower Your Teachers to Deliver a Wolrd-Class Programme to an audience of 750 school leaders and teachers at My Pals Are Here Annual Gathering in Jakarta Indonesia.
2-3 September 2009 In collaboration with SEAMEO RECSAM, Ministry of Education Singapore hosted a seminar on lesson study in primary mathematics. I gave a presentation on lesson study in primary mathematics in Singapore. I was also involved in the two research lessons that were conducted on the second day of the seminar.
13-16 July 2009 Among the various sessions I presented at National Conference on Singapore Math in Las Vegas, USA, was a session on lesson study in kindergarten and elementary school mathematics. I shared research lessons, their research themes and nuggets from the post-lesson discussions.
16 March 2009 Yu Neng Primary School. In this session, teachers were given a quick introduction to lesson study and given a chance to articulate their research themes. Subsequently, I shared tools used in lesson planning, research lesson and post-lesson discussion to facilitate teacher learning. The school has done some lesson study in the past year. This session was repeated on 23 November 2009 for Griffith Primary School which will start on lesson study in selected subjects and grade levels in 2010.
4 Feb 2009 Unity Primary School. A similar session to the one in Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School was held for the group of primary five science teachers interested to do lesson study in the school.
21 Jan 2009 Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School. The presentation was an introduction to lesson study. It aimed to put teachers in the correct mindset when doing lesson study. The school is embarking on a whole-school approach, led by the mathematics department. KCPP sent teachers for the in-service course Lesson Study in Primary Mathematics last year.
